We had great weekend at The PA Beagle Gundog Association Derby Run Off this past weekend! The derby trials are fun as everybody brings their best young prospects to see how they stack up. This is great opportunity to show off your young hounds and see who the high power studs are. All hounds entered in the derby trials are less than 2 years of age.
On Saturday we ran the males and my young male, Purnell's Dead River Bloo Hammer took first place in the show but did not place in the field after being picked up in 6th position from the winner's pack. He had a pretty nasty thorn apple tree thorn in his paw and fell behind the pack. Luckily I had a pair of hemostats in the truck and was able to get the thorn out of his foot. I then applied a coating of the pad heal. The Pad heal is a turpentine based ointment that should help draw out any debris left in the wound and prevent an infection. This young male is showing us everything we want to see at his age. He is still pretty young at about 18 months and according to the show judge, he was the best looking male on the grounds Saturday!
Sunday started out a bit dark and dreary with a steady drizzle and got very windy with driving rain showers. Despite the bad weather for us humans, we couldn't have asked for better conditions for the beagles. All day long the female classes absolutely pounded the rabbits. It is a very good thing I always have a couple of the LCS Camo umbrellas in my dog box. The umbrella(s) really served us well that day and I was amazed at the way they handled the wind. I was sure I was going to have to replace them due to the heavy wind. We had Purnell's Dead River Hare Razing Gem on the ground and she earned a 3rd place in the field and 2nd place in the bench show! This young female is out of my Field Champion Gundog Dead River Hare Razing Ruby by Field Champion Purnell's Dead River Rebel and is really showing what we look for in young dogs, she is a very hard hunter with a ton of desire to find that rabbit and run him til the end! Keep "m in the woods!
